The Buell XB9 and XB12 engines differ significantly from the XL engine in the cam box. Essentially, the order of the cams has been reversed from the XL; cam number 1, which is the rear exhaust in an XL, is the front exhaust in an XB. Cam #2, which is the rear intake, is the front intake in an XB, and so on. XL cams actually fit into the XB gearcase and can be made to work, and in fact, many cam sets are dual-marked, with O's for installation in an XL and V's for installation in an XB. However, for some reason HD put the timing cup keyway in a different position for the XB cams. So unless you want to tackle that problem, you're better off using cams designed for your XB. XB gearcases have a particularly tight clearance issue between the #2 (front intake) cam lobe and the pinion bearing race. Clearancing of the lobe and/or race may be necessary when installing high lift cams.
